Prosecution rests case against Beth Ann White

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The state rested their case against the woman accused of killing a mother and her infant son during a crash in Hinds County two years ago.

Beth Ann White is accused of killing Allison Conaway and her six-month-old son, Alex, while driving under the influence. White was indicted on four counts of aggravated DUI.

Prosecutors called an additional three witnesses to the stand on Wednesday to testify about what occurred on November 1, 2021.

Pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. James Shiflett said Conaway’s two other children, Chelsea and Chloe, were brought to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) with life-threatening brain and spinal injuries following the fatal crash.

Shiflett said the two children survived after a series of surgeries.

Brittney Moore worked as a registered nurse at Merit Health Central at the time of the incident. She said White was uncooperative as she attempted to draw blood.

“Whenever we get presented with a search warrant and the kit, the patient is then taken to a room where we have available. The blood is drawn, is labeled with the labels provided in the kit, and then the kit is sealed and signed by me and transferred that kit to the officer,” Moore explained.

The state alleges White’s blood alcohol content level was .273% the night of the crash, which is nearly three times more than the legal limit. The legal limit is .08% in Mississippi.

The defense questioned who had the right of way during the crash.

“Well, it shows the Nissan is traveling slowly. Yes, I agree with it. But it does show whether there’s a traffic signal, red or green or blue,” said Tim Corbitt, a collision reconstruction specialist.

Officials said caffeine, THC, and hydrocodone was also discovered in White’s blood. The defense argues that the substances found in White’s blood are not controlled substances.

Court will resume on Thursday, November 30 at 8:30 a.m. The defense will bring forth a final witness before the jury begins deliberations.
