Overnight storms cause power outages in Jackson

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Overnight storms left some Jackson neighbors without power on Tuesday, January 9.

Homeowners on Nakoma Drive said they were without power for hours. Strong winds caused damage to trees and power lines in the neighborhood. Police blocked off part of the street in order for electrical crews to clean debris from the area.

Residents are now preparing for more winter weather ahead of freezing temperatures.

“During these winter months, we do see a rise in fires because people are trying to stay warm. And a lot of times people are using unsafe measures to do that,” said Deputy Fire Chief Cleotha Sanders.

Sanders said neighbors should take precautionary measures and have an escape plan in case of a fire.

Entergy spokesperson Candace Coleman also agreed that preparation is key.

“And today we have high winds still happening. High winds can impact the ability to send bucket trucks up in the air. So, while we do know what damage needs to be repaired, sometimes our crews can’t do it because it’s not safe just yet,” she said.
