JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Officials with JXN Water said they’re still concerned about the spread of misinformation online that led to issues with the capital city’s water system.
Officials said the misinformation may have been a “deliberate attempt” to disrupt water services for all JXN Water customers.
The post went viral at some point on Wednesday, January 17. JXN Water officials said the post created an additional demand on the water system of more than 4 million gallons, which resulted in the loss of system pressure for 12,000 customers by Thursday, January 18.
According to JXN Water, the post stated, “Just got word they are about to shut off water in Jackson. If you’re in Jackson, fill up your tubs and jugs! Get prepared for not having water.”
JXN Water officials said they will be working with law enforcement agencies to identify the sources of the post and to determine if the sources had criminal intent, which could lead to prosecution.
As of Friday, January 19, officials said 1,000 customers throughout south and west Jackson in the previously identified five zip codes still do not have water. Fourteen crews are working to repair large leaks throughout the system, which will continue throughout the weekend. So far, 85 large leaks have been reported.
What can customers do?
- Report leaks by calling the call center at 601-500-5200.
- Find leaks on your property and in your home. While JXN Water repairs will make a difference, they need everyone to look at their own property for leaks and make those repairs as quickly as possible. As of Friday morning, customers are using 60 percent more water than they do on a typical day.
- Cut back on water use Friday and through the weekend. JXN Water officials said they need the help of customers to reduce water consumption for the next few days while the system recovers. Check property for leaks, and close any faucets open for freeze protection (until temperatures drop below 30 degrees Friday night and then just a very small drip).
