Jackson Veterans Home uses reserve water tanks

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – This week’s frigid weather has impacted the capital city’s water system.

Jackson residents, as well as some healthcare facilities, had to take some drastic steps in order to secure clean water.

Officials at the Jackson Veterans Home said their water situation is stable, mainly due to the help of the reserve water tanks. The facility pulls water from two 6,400 gallon tanks to use for flushing toilets and washing clothes and dishes.

They also have fire suppression towers in case of an emergency. Those towers hold 5,000 gallons of water.

Every six hours, two new tanks come and cycle in fresh water for the facility to use. It’s a roughly $100,000 investment to have the reserve water system, but those who work at the Jackson Veterans Home said the fresh water is priceless.

“In the past, we did not have this water system on backup. And so, we did go days, sometimes as long as a week without having water. And we just can’t have that, you know, not just with this home. We understand that everybody in this community right now doesn’t have water. We’re just blessed to have funds from the state legislature that we can invest in this water system that you see outside,” said Ray Coleman, director of communications for Mississippi Veterans Affairs.

The Jackson Veterans Home resides in zip code 39209, which was one of the five zip codes placed under a boil water notice in the capital city this week.
