HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – One person was injured during a deputy-involved shooting at the Kroger off of Interstate 55 in Jackson.
Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said deputies responded to the scene Friday night. The incident happened around 8:00 p.m.
Bailey Martin, press secretary for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS), said the deputy was working as a security guard at the Kroger when the deputy was notified about a disturbance in the parking lot.
When the deputy approached the vehicle, he saw what appeared to be a weapon and discharged his weapon.
According to Jones, the suspect was shot and taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson for treatment. He is in stable condition.
The suspect was identified as 68-year-old Billie Williams, Jr., of Jackson. Once Williams has been released from the hospital, Jones said he will face felony charges stemming from the incident.
Martin said the deputy did not receive any serious physical injuries.
Agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) are investigating the shooting. Once they complete the investigation, they will share their findings with the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
