Jackson police officer injured after suspect crashes into patrol car

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A Jackson police officer was injured after a suspect’s vehicle crashed into a patrol car.

Bailey Martin, press secretary for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS), said Capitol police were involved in a brief chase with the suspect on Tuesday, January 23.

Martin said the driver ran a red light at the intersection of Rose Street and Robinson Street and struck a Jackson police officer’s patrol car.

The officer and the suspect both suffered minor injuries.

Martin identified the driver as Renard Kenvotae Austin, 21. During a search of his vehicle, officers said they found marijuana and a firearm.

Austin was charged with felony fleeing, aggravated assault on a police officer, and felony possession of controlled substances with firearm enhancement.
