JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Years of unchecked, illegal dumping in parts of Jackson have left many searching in vain for solutions to the problem.
Jackson’s Solid Waste Division responded to calls this week about illegal dumping on Gary Drive. Someone dumped tires on the side of the road and caused a nuisance for neighbors.
“Unfortunately, this has not been the first time that a truckload of tires has been dumped on the street. And so, we want to be proactive. We’re going to talk with a team about trying to get a camera out here and make some extra patrol as it seems to happen at night. But, you know, I take dumping very seriously here in my ward. And we’re going to make sure that the illegal actors are taken care of expeditiously,” said City Councilwoman Angelique Lee, Ward 2.
There are similar dumping sites along other roads surrounding Gary Drive. Residents said it’s been this way for years.
“My thing in my hope is that we get something done. We have some people that come in, look at our area. We need to need them to do something about our area because this is an area that has been overlooked for many, many years. Just look at this area. This is a terminal area. You’ve got how that had been burnt down for several, several years. You’ve got trash being pile up,” said Thomas Cheatham, who lives in the area.
