MERIDIAN, Miss. (WJTV) – A Meridian police officer was injured during a shooting while escorting a suspect to a court hearing.
Bailey Martin, press secretary for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS), said the incident occurred on Thursday, February 1, 2024.
Martin said the officer was escorting the suspect to a court hearing when the suspect secured a weapon and shot the officer. A second Meridian police officer shot the suspect.
According to Martin, the officer and suspect both received non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to local hospitals.
Martin said agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) are investigating the officer-involved shooting. They will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office.
