FORREST COUNTY, Miss. (WHLT) – A man who was wanted for attempted murder in North Carolina was captured in Mississippi.

Officials with the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) said troopers attempted to stop the suspect’s vehicle around 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, February 1.

Troopers said the driver, who was identified as 25-year-old Freddy Renteria, led them on a chase before coming to a stop on Interstate 59 North in Forrest County. Renteria was wanted for attempted first-degree murder in North Carolina.

Renteria was arrested and charged with felony fleeing. Troopers said he was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries from a self-inflicted gunshot wound sustained after the chase.

Renteria is currently awaiting extradition to North Carolina.
