VICKSBURG, Miss. (WJTV) – An empty barge struck the Old Vicksburg Bridge in the Mississippi River on Thursday, February 8.
The Vicksburg Post reported the impact broke the barge apart and turned it sideways and parallel to the bridges. No injuries were reported.
Officials told the newspaper that the higher river level and an increased current likely led to the collision. They said the strike did not appear to have damaged the structural integrity of the Old Vicksburg Bridge.
Ergon boats were dispatched to aid in the process of freeing the barges.
The collision has shut down water traffic through Vicksburg for an indefinite amount of time.
