JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Members of Jackson State University’s (JSU) Sonic Boom of the South returned to Mississippi on Monday after performing with Usher during the Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show.

Band members reacted to the performance of a lifetime as Super Bowl LVIII. One of the drum majors said the experience was bigger than the Boom.

“So, the experience was it was very, very 10 out of 10, 100 out of 100, 1,000 out of 1,000. And it only gets bigger and bigger than that. So, it’s bigger than us. It’s bigger than the university,” said Desi Jenkins, a drum major for the Sonic Boom of the South.

Millions of people got to see the Boom high-step while Usher sang some of his greatest hits.

“My favorite part is in the beginning when Usher is coming out and doing the dances, and you can just see the JSU bass drums in the background, and they’re swinging back and forth. You just see Sonic Boom of the South like that just looks, I don’t know, it just looks so good to me,” said Treasure White, a member of the Sonic Boom of the South.

Dr. Roderick Little, the Director of Bands at JSU, said alumnus and former band member Cortez Bryant was responsible for the Boom performing in the Super Bowl this year. He’s also responsible for the alumni band being on tour with Drake and J.Cole.

“Yes. So, the band program is doing some outstanding things. To your point, you know, not only did we just complete the the Super Bowl halftime show, but we also had some of our alum to go and tour with Drake. So, we’re providing opportunities for our current students and also the students that leave Jackson State University. So, our program is one of those programs that continuously, you know, gives back to our students. They come through these hollow grounds  Jackson State University,” said Little.

With the Sonic Boom back in Jackson, they’re preparing for the 136th Rose Parade in 2025.
