JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – In a 4-3 vote, the Jackson City Council approved funding for the construction of 60 tiny homes that would be used to house the city’s homeless.

The Jackson Resource Center will receive $2.8 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.

The homes will be built on an 18-acre lot on Capers Avenue. Putalamus White, the founder of the center, said she’s been developing the project for more than a decade.

Councilmembers Aaron Banks, Brian Grizzell, Virgi Lindsay and Angelique Lee voted in favor of the measure. Councilmen Kenneth Stokes, Ashby Foote and Vernon Hartley voted against the measure.

The land where the homes will be built is located in Hartley’s ward. He argued the homes could create more problems for residents in the area.

White said the construction will happen in phases.
