MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — The man accused of a kidnapping in Southaven, Mississippi last week has been identified as 37-year-old Elmer Smith.

Smith is charged with kidnapping, domestic violence, evading arrest, evading arrest in an automobile, disregarding a red light, driving while license suspended, reckless driving, and reckless endangerment.

On February 15 around 1:15 p.m., the MMS Task Force was informed that the suspect was in the area of East Parkway and Barton Street.

Smith was reportedly driving a black 2023 Toyota 4Runner and had a victim trapped inside.

According to reports, Smith had an active warrant out of Southaven, Mississippi, and domestic violence assault warrants out of Shelby County, Tennessee.

Police say they located the vehicle downtown and attempted a traffic stop. When Smith refused to stop, a police pursuit initiated.

During the police chase, officers say that Smith was driving extremely erratic into oncoming traffic as well as going off the road, weaving in and out of multiple lanes of traffic, and running several red lights.

The police chase ended in a crash after the vehicle hit a fence in Whitehaven on Shelby Drive and Elvis Presley Boulevard.

That is when Smith got out of the car and began to run eastbound on Shelby Drive. He was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.

The victim was found in the passenger seat of Smith’s car with minor scratches on her face. She refused treatment, but the suspect was taken to Regional One Hospital in non-critical condition.

Elmer Smith’s next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
