CARROLL COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – A fire destroyed the Mississippi John Hurt Museum in Carroll County.
Carroll County deputies said the fire happened in the early morning hours of February 21 at the museum’s location on County Road 109.
A Delta Electric service technician was dispatched to the area. Upon arrival, the technician discovered the museum was fully engulfed in flames and contacted first responders.
Because of the historical significance of the site, deputies said the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI, and the Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office also responded to the scene and are working with Carroll County deputies on the investigation. They said no foul play is suspected at this time.
The museum is on the National Historic Registry and is also an official stop on the Mississippi Blues Trail.
“It is always a sad thing to lose a site of historical significance to our county and state. I know this museum was important to the Hurt family as well. I appreciate the rapid response of state and federal agencies to work alongside us as we complete our investigation,” said Carroll County Sheriff Clint Walker.
