JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WHLT) – Jones County firefighters responded to two large fires on Sunday, February 25.
Just before 2:00 p.m., firefighters responded to Barnes Drive for a woods fire. They said the fire spanned an area from Barnes Drive to north at Shady School Road and east to Shady School Road to Elliot Houston Road.
During the fire, two abandoned homes burned. Several residents were asked to evacuation the area while firefighters rsponded.
The Mississippi Forestry Commission (MFC) also responded and cut fire lanes to help contain the blaze.
Officials with the Jones County Fire Council said an estimated 40 acres burned along with the two abandoned homes. No injuries were reported.
At the same time, firefighters responded to a 30 acre woods fire off of Ben Thompson Road. The MFC also assisted with this fire.
According to officials, there were more than 10 woods/brush fires on Sunday, mostly occurring between noon and 6:00 p.m.
