LAUREL, Miss. (WHLT) – A Laurel family is mourning the loss of a loved one who was shot and killed at a sports bar.

Laurel Police said Damarius Cooley, 31, was shot and killed at Premier Sports Bar and Grill just before midnight on Saturday, February 24.

Cooley’s sister, Adreanna Gammage, said she was with her brother at the bar just 20 minutes before Cooley and another man were shot in the restroom. She said her brother had recently been released from jail and was working to rebuild his life and provide for his three children.

“I’m still absolutely shocked about what happened. I was able to look at the footage of what happened. I saw my brother go in the bathroom, and he got shot for nothing. And the other young man, he got shot for nothing, as well. It’s very senseless. There was no beef. There was no prior argument, no nothing. I had just seen him,” Gammage said.

“We have reason to believe from video and statements that there were no problems, that this was just a spur-of-the-moment thing. And this tends to be what we see nowadays, just young people not thinking past the next five minutes,” said Laurel Police Chief Tommy Cox.

Police arrested Clifton McGruder, 24, in connection to the fatal shooting. He was charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder.

McGruder was released on a $2 million bond.
