JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The popular app TikTok could soon be banned in the United States. The bill passed the U.S. House and is now in the U.S. Senate.
The effect has been felt in the City of Jackson, because local content creators have found their rise to fame on the app.
“Man it would break my heart personally, because like, you know, saying TikTok is how I got started, you know, saying TikTok is how I got the confidence to get going to do standup comedy, because I’m a standup comedian, too. So yeah, it would break my heart not being able to laugh, and you know, to have fun trying to perfect my craft,” said Zion Ross, a content creator.
Another creator, Call Me Mooch, said he went viral for a video that he wanted to shine a positive light on Jackson.
“But I made a video to Sexy Redd song, and she reposted it and got 3.7 million views. And I was like, this is crazy. Well, then there are the videos I made with the content really just go crazy on there. And it was like, this is something that we can really change the perspective of where we live, you know what I’m saying? Cause people got their own perspective on Jackson, so we giving them an insight that the world don’t see because they never come here,” he said.
If the Senate does pass the bill it doesn’t necessarily mean an end to TikTok.
A U.S. owner could buy the app and several have already expressed interest. On Thursday, former U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin told CNBC he’s looking to put together an investor group to buy TikTok.
President Biden says if senators do send the bill to his desk he’ll sign it into law.
