MADISON COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – The Madison County Board of Supervisors is in the process of recovering nearly $3 million following a cyber scam.
Documents showed that an imposter, by the name of Jay Hemphill, posed as a representative for the Hemphill Construction Company. This incident report was filed on March 19 by the Madison County Board of Supervisors. More than $2.7 million was stolen in the fraud incident.
The reported stated that all invoices that the county received from Hemphill Construction were “true and legitimate.” The only difference was the email address the invoices were sent from ended with “.com” whereas “.us” was used for the payment form.
“It was reported to us as a fraudulent event of a scam. It was brought to our attention immediately. It was timely handled. It was assigned. It’s being investigated by federal and state and local authorities,” said Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker.
A total of three payments were made to the imposter from February 21 to March 15.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Secret Service, the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office, the State Auditor’s Office and the FBI were contacted about the incident.
“We’re confident that and that we can recover some if not all the funds, but we’re highly confident that we’ll be able to recover some of those funds. And we have confidence that moving forward, we won’t have to face this again,” said Tucker.
The county administrator plans to announce new safety measures at the next Board of Supervisors meeting on April 1 at 9:00 a.m.
