Teen arrested for shooting death of 15-year-old girl in Hattiesburg

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WHLT) – Hattiesburg police and Lamar County deputies arrested a 17-year-old in connection to the shooting death of a 15-year-old girl.

Police said the unidentified 17-year-old was charged with one count of first degree murder. He has been charged as an adult and booked into the Forrest County Jail.

This comes after 15-year-old Janya Lumzy was shot and killed around 4:45 a.m. on Monday, March 25 at Pineview Apartments in the 1500 block of Country Club Road.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the 15-year-old unresponsive outside the stairwell of the apartment complex.

Lumzy was a student at Hattiesburg High School.
