HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – The Hinds County Board of Supervisors decided to delay a voting precinct merger plan.

Supervisor Wanda Evers, District 4, motioned on Monday to rescind the board’s February 5 decision to close and merge several voting precincts. Board members agreed to the pause due to an ongoing investigation into precinct and election management.

“We know a lot of the schools that were closed is not going to be closing. So, we’re going to meet with the superintendent, and we’re going to make sure those precincts stay open,” said Evers.

“People have been voting at these precincts for years. Now is not the time to start changing. So, I’m glad to see that they’re negotiating a better solution because closing all those precincts was not the answer,” said Supervisor Tony Smith, District 2.

He said the board is working to keep as many precincts open as possible.

Monday’s decision will not affect Tuesday’s Republican primary runoff for Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District.
