MADISON COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker said nearly all of the $2.7 million stolen during a recent cyber scam will soon be back in the county’s account.
The sheriff added that there does not appear to be any criminal intent from any county employee.
The county lost the money after a scammer posed as a representative for a current vendor. Tucker said they’re looking at a possible recovery of $2.2 million.
During Monday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, county leaders discussed ways to make sure this does not happen again.
County Administrator Greg Higginbotham and Chancery Clerk Ronny Lott presented their proposals. One thing the county is already doing is putting a 30-45 day delay on large payments, so officials can make sure it’s going to the right place.
Higginbotham said more long term solutions will be needed. He said the county should also consider an internal audit department.
