Mississippi mobile sports betting bill survives deadline

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Tuesday is a committee deadline day for lawmakers at the Mississippi State Capitol.

Plenty of bills will die, but some are still moving through the legislative process. Among those bills is a bill that would legalize mobile sports betting in Mississippi.

The Senate Gaming Committee passed the bill out of committee Tuesday morning, but they attached a strike-all amendment to the measure. Such amendments are attached when one chamber has major changes for a bill.

State Sen. David Blount (D-District 29), chairman of the Senate Gaming Committee, said he’s worried about the impact the bill could have on brick and mortar casinos.

“We’re still looking at that, that bill still alive. And it’s working its way through the process. It does not protect brick and mortar, so that’s a concern. I mean, there are tens of thousands of people in Mississippi who work in these industries and these jobs, and that’s important. So, the House bill doesn’t do that. But we’re willing to start looking at it and that’s what we’re doing,” said Blount.
