JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The City of Jackson is set to make the full and final payment to Bettersten Wade, who filed a lawsuit against the city following her brother’s death.
Wade filed the lawsuit saying that her brother, George Robinson, was killed by a former Jackson police officer.
“First of all, it is very unfortunate that this had to happen to anybody, and we need to work on making sure that this stuff is prevented all across the board, all over the country. But at the end of the day, you know, our legal team did you know, their job. And the legal team for those families did their job,” said City Council President Aaron Banks, Ward 6.
During Tuesday’s City Council meeting, members unanimously voted to settle in the amount of $17,000.
In 2019, Robinson died two days after a Jackson police traffic stop involving former JPD officer Anthony Fox.
Councilman Kenneth Stokes, Ward 3, believes Wade deserved more money.
“It should have been higher. Now, that’s just my opinion. I can remember when Ruby Griffin was killed and the city paid, I think, a quarter of $1 million. I’m saying it just sends the wrong message about human life, Black, especially Black people. So, I think a step in the right direction would have been to pay the family a little more,” Stokes said.
Fox went on to work for the Clinton Police Department. He was initially convicted in the 2019 death of Robinson. Fox was sentenced to five years in prison in August 2022 after a jury found him guilty of culpable negligence manslaughter.
In January 2024, the Mississippi Court of Appeals reversed Fox’s conviction. They reviewed the case and found that the evidence was insufficient to support the verdict.
On February 6, 2023, the City of Clinton’s Board of Aldermen approved Police Chief Ford Hayman’s request to re-hire Fox. He returned to work as a K9 narcotics detective.
