FLOWOOD, Miss. (WJTV) – Authorities are investigating after human remains were found in a Flowood pond.
Flowood police said they received a call from around 7:15 p.m. on Sunday, May 5. They said children, who were fishing in the area, discovered a leg bone in a pond near 4200 Mangum Road.
When officers arrived at the location, they confirmed human remains were found. The Rankin County coroner took possession of the partial remains.
Flowood police and the Rankin County EOC searched the pond on Monday, May 6.
“We came back this morning with the help of Rankin County EOC and the flow at fire department. We’ve been searching the pond this morning, locating additional remains,” said Detective Sean Haddakin, with the Flowood Police Department.
They recovered more skeletal remains, including a skull.
“This is, again, city property. It is gated with no trespassing signs, no fishing signs. So, there is very minimal traffic back here. There are some ponds back here. People know this is a fishing spot, even though they’re not supposed to be back here. But it is remote enough that you would need to know of this area,” said Haddakin.
He said the next step in the investigation is to revisit missing person reports.
“We’re receiving all the missing persons reports from this area and then broaden it out from there. We need to identify male, female. We don’t have any other information at this time,” stated Haddakin.
