JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson police are investigating after a 12-year-old accidentally shot himself.

The incident happened in the 3800 lock of Meadow Lane on Sunday, May 19.

Detective Tommie Brown said the 12-year-old was at a friend’s house when he picked up a handgun and shot himself in the right knee. The child was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) for treatment. He has non-life threatening injuries.

Brown said Child Protective Services (CPS) and the Jackson Police Department’s (JPD) Juvenile Division responded to the scene. The weapon was recovered at the scene.
