JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson police said they’re going to hold the owner of an abandoned hotel accountable.
Police said they’re working with the North Jackson community to rid the capital city of the Hotel O property. The hotel is located off of Interstate 55 South and has been in litigation for a couple of years.
The owner of the hotel is Noah Muthana, who the city has been battling in court. Jackson police said attempts have been made to contact Muthana, who now has warrants for his arrest. They said the property has become an unsafe abode for the homeless.
The Jackson Police Department’s (JPD) Community Engagement Unit went to the hotel on Wednesday in order to offer shelter resource information to the homeless.
Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes, Ward 3, said the property is interfering with economic development and citizens’ safety.
“It’s time to put some action with words. I know they invested their life savings in so many cases. They tried to leave some for their children, and in other cases. And then you have people who don’t give a damn. Just come in and rob their neighborhoods, going into abandoned houses, you know, stealing anything they can steal. This is okay, but it’s not okay. They’re not going to do these crazy things that they’re doing in any other city but Jackson, because we allowed it to happen. But this chief of police is saying, ‘Not on his shift,’” stated Stokes.
Melissa Faith Payne, communications director for the City of Jackson, previously told WJTV 12 News that the ideal goal is to demolish the hotel.
