RICHLAND, Miss. (WJTV) – The City of Richland released a video to WJTV 12 News that shows a former police officer making inappropriate statements and remarks.

Richland Police Chief Adrian Ready said the video was brought to the department’s attention on June 4, 2024. He said there was no date given and no footage could be viewed at the first report of the incident.

According to Ready, an investigation began to research body camera video of the previous weekend, but they were unable to find any altercation that would justify concern.

The video in question was later viewed in its entirety. The police chief said the incident involved a Richland police officer, who was identified in the video as Officer Rast, and a resident on a disturbance call that occurred on June 2, 2024.

In the video, Rast said, “Well why don’t you go back to Mexico or something? Whatever. I don’t care. Just get the (expletive) out of Richland for me, please. Because I don’t… I do not like y’all being here.”

The video also showed the officer calling the man an “illegal.” He also told the man to get out of the city, or he would find any reason to arrest them. Rast also mentioned that police have been called to the property several times.

Ready said the officer did not have his body camera on during the exchange.

The police chief said Rast was called in and relieved of duty. During that time, the officer resigned from his position as a patrol officer.

“As Police Chief, it is with great disappointment that we announce the immediate removal of the officer who made derogatory slurs. This type of language is not only unacceptable, but it also undermines the trust and respect that we work hard to build within our community. We want to make it clear that this behavior will not be tolerated within our department and we are committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity,” said Ready.
