HOLMES COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Holmes County residents have seen a recent spike in crime.
A 36-year-old man was killed in June 2 in what Lexington police believe was a drive-by shooting on Clifton Street. They said the victim, Liddell Smith, was sitting in a vehicle when he was shot.
“Sunday night, about 11:30, some in that area received a call that someone on Clifton Street in the city of Lexington got shot sitting in their automobile. So, that’s going to be a one shooting is taking place in Holmes County within the three or four hours that took place,” said Holmes County Sheriff Willie March.
Another drive-by shooting occurred in Tchula the same night. This shooting claimed the life of another man.
“Young, Black male had been shot multiple times. As of right now, we don’t have any suspects. We got one name that’s someone called in to say that witness said that they saw, but we have nothing more as to where we can pick them up and put a warrant out for,” said Tchula Police Chief Dequarian Smith.
“It is spiking. It’s something like you’ve never really seen and not just at home, kind of all around. I think our young children, they are not valued in life, so they don’t value their life. They don’t have value that other person’s life,” said Beulah Greet, the executive director of Community Stewards Learning Center in Lexington.
No suspects have been arrested in connection to the two shootings. Anyone with information about the fatal shootings can contact Crime Stoppers.
