DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. — The DeSoto County District Attorney’s Office says video of a DeSoto County inmate’s escape was stolen from the office.
According to District Attorney Matthew Barton, video of 31-year-old Joshua James Zimmerman escaping from the DeSoto County Courthouse was stolen Wednesday, the same day the D.A.’s office received it.
Barton said civilians “who are not a part of law enforcement” had a leaked version of the video that he was able to watch.
The DeSoto County District Attorney’s Office says a grand jury will investigate the DeSoto County Courthouse after an inmate escaped from the building last week.
“Once that was taken, we realized in order for true transparency, we have to hand this over to the grand jury,” Barton said.
Zimmerman, who faces an attempted murder charge out of Southaven and a murder charge in Texas, has been on the run since just before 8 a.m. Friday, when he walked out of the DeSoto County courthouse in Hernando, Mississippi.
According to District Attorney Matthew Barton, the grand jury will investigate the courthouse and any court building they believe needs to be reviewed, as well as anyone associated with state evidence.
While Barton would not say he believed an employee helped Zimmerman, he stressed that it is a felony to tamper with evidence.
DeSoto County Sheriff Thomas E. Tuggle II said in a press conference Wednesday that Zimmerman exploited a flaw in the building’s design to escape.
He left the courthouse in a pair of pajamas and shower shoes, walked across the street, and asked for a ride from a Good Samaritan, telling the man that he had just been in a fight with his wife, Tuggle said.
As an internal investigation begins, Tuggle is clear on where his focus remains.
“Zimmerman, if you’re out there and you hear this, turn yourself in, because we’re gonna find you, and I promise you we’re gonna put your gluteus maximus in a cell by yourself,” Tuggle said.
