MADISON COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – The family of Tyra Small-Jackson called for justice after police said she was killed during a crash by a suspected drunk driver.

Small-Jackson was killed during a crash on Interstate 55 in Gluckstadt on Saturday, June 22. Gluckstadt police said a wrong-way driver, identified as Jordan Leah Sullivan, of Louisville, crashed head-on into Small-Jackson’s vehicle.

Small-Jackson’s mother and three sisters are still picking up the pieces of a tragedy that occurred on her mother’s birthday.

“I had just gotten home from celebrating my birthday with this daughter of mine and her daughter and her families. My baby called me and told me. She said, ‘Mama, I need you to come down.’ I knew something had happened. My heart just went, it felt like it was about to come out of my chest because she had just left, it seemed like she had just left me,” said Bennie Small, Small-Jackson’s mother.

Sullivan has been charged with aggravated DUI. She received a $250,000 bond on Monday, June 24. According to Gluckstadt police, Sullivan has one prior DUI arrest.

“We’ve seen drug dealers get no bond, million dollar bonds. For this person to take such a life from us and get a $250,000 bond, I think that’s a little lenient,” said Sharetta Donalson, Small-Jackson’s sister.

“I wish that every time she closed her eyes, she would see my daughter’s face. When she closes her eyes at night, I wish that. I hope that she sees my daughter’s face. I hope she can’t sleep for seeing my daughter’s face,” said Small.

Officials with the Canton Public School District said Small-Jackson was a teacher at Nichols Middle School. The family hopes to preserve her memory as a beloved sister and educator.

“She was a great mother, a great sister, a great aunt and a great grandmother. A great wife,” said Marsha Warfield, Small-Jackson’s sister.

“Our job and our duty is to speak for her until the arms of justice sway in her favor,” said Donalson.
