CANTON, Miss. (WJTV) – A $17 million project to expand a manufacturing plant in Canton may come at the cost of a nearby neighborhood road closure.
Presto of Canton Sales and Storage is considering expanding their facility to improve company productions. The proposed expansion would result in the closure of Matthew Road.
Residents said it would be inconvenient to take alternate routes because of the poor road conditions in the area. Those residents also fear emergency personnel would not be able to navigate those roads if they needed to respond.
“We are putting citizens at risk. We’re putting children at risk, catching the bus outside, having to go three blocks in order to catch them both. Now, when it only took them one block or half a block. So, yes, I’m very concerned with the outcome,” said Barbara Thomas, who lives in Canton.
“With a community of that size and nature, people will get sick and need emergency response assistance. So, we hope that all of this is being looked at from a holistic standpoint because this as soon as you leave, things may happen to you. And if those things may happen, then you should get the necessary assistance that’s required,” said Canton Alderman Tim Taylor, Ward 5.
Canton leaders plan to revisit the matter on Tuesday when they vote whether to approve the project.
