RAYMOND, Miss. (WJTV) – A Raymond resident filed an appeal against the Hinds County Board of Supervisors, Soul City Storage, and Soul City Energy over a solar farm project.

This comes several days after the Hinds County Board of Supervisors approved the project, which will be located near Raymond and Bolton.

Allison Lauderdale asked for a judge in the Hinds County Circuit Court to reverse the supervisors’ vote. They approved the conditional use land permit 3-2.

According to Lauderdale, the residents are requesting an an environmental impact assessment be conducted before any new permits are granted for the project.

Raymond Mayor Isla Tullos asked for a one year delay from granting the permits requested by Apex Clean Energy, which owns Soul City Solar.

“Hinds County is well behind on keeping pace with regulatory updates, and we’re asking a one year suspension until these guidelines are in place,” said Lauderdale.

She said a public hearing was not conducted even though it was required for applicants seeking a conditional use permit.

Brian O’Shea, the director of public engagement with Apex Clean Energy, said, “We have incorporated significant community feedback from our open house on May 14 and the public hearings held on May 28. We will continue to take in feedback to improve the project further leading up to construction next year.”

O’Shea said the project will be huge economically for Hinds County, and they’re proud to work with the local farmers and others within the community.
