JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba said the City Council cannot issue contracts to the police and fire chiefs on their own.
The mayor responded Monday to the City Council overriding Lumumba’s veto of the proposal in June. He was joined by Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade, who said he’s never asked for a contract.
Councilman Kenneth Stokes, Ward 3, previously stated that if Wade had a contract, he could fight crime in the capital city without his hands being tied.
The police chief said he’s received many calls and texts surrounding the contract conversations. Wade said he respects the Council, but he didn’t step into the role for money or power.
“I understand what comes with this job. I took it to improve the conditions here in the City of Jackson. I took it to improve the conditions within the Jackson Police Department,” said Wade.
Lumumba said if the police chief signs a contract, Wade would be responsible for his healthcare, and it would impact what he receives in retirement.
