JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The family of a security guard, who was killed while on duty in Jackson, said they’re still trying to process the loss of their loved one.
They said Roy Love, 60, died while doing something he loved, which was working in the community that he deeply cared for. His wife, Katina Love, said he was a dedicated, hard worker with a heart for people.
“But to know, somebody was just taken from you. They’re just taken from you. That’s a whole different kind of pain and hurt,” she said.
Katina said her husband worked as a security guard for the M&M Food Express on Cooper Road for a little more than 10 years. She recalled him leaving the house to head to work like any other day, not knowing that it was the last time that she would see him.
“I was thinking that I was going to walk in, go down the street, and see him come and maybe with a bike, with a flat tire or something like that. But I never did. I would go outside and be walking down my driveway. And as I’m walking down the driveway, the police are coming up to let me know what had happened to my husband,” she said.
Jackson police said 17-year-old Trent Wooten, 17-year-old Zaylon Norton, and 16-year-old Kadaris Cohen killed Roy Love during a robbery in the early morning hours of Monday, July 8. They were later arrested and each charged with capital murder.
One resident in the area believes a curfew needs to be put in place.
“They’ve got to be at home at a certain time, and I think that would curb a lot of stuff going on, the crime in Jackson. If we put the individual at home underage, under 18 at a certain time, they can’t be out here on the street because a lot of crime is going on with the young folks being out here on the street,” said Milton Craig, a friend of Roy Love.
Camryn Brown, Roy Love’s daughter, said she fears for the future of the youth in Jackson.
“He was one of the best father figures I could ever have. He really believed in me and my brother. He always wanted us to do good, to be in the young generation and see it. I just hope that, you know, everybody kind of starts to learn to be to let their emotions not get the best of them in and understand that everybody got family,” said Brown.
The three suspects were denied bond on Monday.
A balloon release for Roy Love will be held at M&M Food Express on Saturday, July 13 at 6:00 p.m.
