HAZLEHURST, Miss. (WJTV) – One month after a 22-year-old Hazlehurst mother was shot and killed, her family is still seeking justice.

Clarissa Belton, the mother of Elexus Joiner, believes the Hazlehurst Police Department are not thoroughly investigating the case.

Joiner was described by her family as a king-hearted individual who loved to dance and spend time with her two children.

Joiner was shot and killed on Stowell Street in June. Fredrequez Gary, 32, has been charged with murder in the case. Belton believes believes Gary’s girlfriend is the person who killed Joiner. The girlfriend has not been charged with any crime.

“And he runs up there and tells the people he did it and knows he didn’t. He beat me. He pistol-whipped me. I was in the ICU, but I still pulled through. My child didn’t make it. No, you all need to investigate,” said Belton.

“Her butt was there before the fact and after the fact. She had her baby in her arms when she got shot. What kind of justice do we have?” questioned Tammy Jones, Joiner’s grandmother.

Belton said she’s reached out to Hazlehurst police on several occasions about harassment and bullying via social media about her daughter’s death. Hazlehurst Police Chief Anthony Parker said he was made aware of the harassment and advised those affected to file a complaint.

Police said evidence has been sent to the Mississippi Crime Lab, and the investigation is ongoing.
