JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Some Jackson city leaders want a few gas stations and convenience stores to close their doors for good due to violence, but it’s a process that requires several steps.
Councilman Kenneth Stokes, Ward 3, pushed for the Texaco gas station on Medgar Evers Boulevard to close its doors. He proposed a resolution of a “no confidence” vote in City Attorney Drew Martin, citing that there is a lack of concern from Martin when it comes to issues in the capital city.
In a 4-2 vote, the majority of the City Council voted against the “no confidence” measure. Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba defended Martin during the meeting.
“When someone, who is defending the city on several matters of litigation, protecting us each and every day, someone who may just be overworked is now being accused of, let’s call it what it is, being racist because he doesn’t live in a community,” said Lumumba.
Stokes said he will continue to to protest the businesses until they’re shut down.
“Something must be done. We have other convenience stores, service stations where people have died, and the nuisance statue has been used,” said Stokes.
