MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Mississippi man has been charged with multiple crimes after a 2-year-old was shot in the head and critically injured.

Eduardo Montero is charged with four counts of attempted murder, three counts of felony child abuse and one count each of domestic violence and aggravated assault, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office said.

Montero is in custody on a $2 million bond. The child remains in extremely critical condition, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday.

The shooting happened around midnight Monday at a trailer park off Cayce Road in Marshall County, just south of the Mississippi state line.

Officials said a man and woman were arguing when a gun went off, wounding the child, who was lying in bed.

“They were in a relationship and they were in the midst of splitting up, and the altercation led to a weapon being pulled, and there was a struggle and there was a shot fired,” said Kelly McMillen, Lt. Col. of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.

The 2-year-old’s name is Eduardo, according to his mother.
