TUNICA, Miss. — Tunica residents can expect to see and hear a large number of military helicopters for the next few days as they take part in exercises in North Mississippi.

The 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky is using the Tunica Airport as a base. They are stopping there to refuel during what’s described as a “major training operation.”

“The 101st Airborne Division is conducting a long-range air-assault operation and this is on (the) way to training from Fort Campbell, Kentucky to Fort Johnson, Louisiana,” said Lt. Mallory Hirn of 129th Division Sustainment Support.

Some of the Army’s biggest and most impressive aircrafts are roaring over the Mississippi Delta using the Tunica Airport for refueling operations until Friday.

Military aircraft flies over Tunica Airport.

“It’s going to be a high-energy event so I think just the environment will be a lot of excitement,” Lt. Hirn said.

“Exciting” and a first for the Tunica Airport.

“This is the first time we’ve had anything like this out here,” Marie Warner said. “It is a great honor to have been chosen as a spot for their training mission.”

Warner, the manager of the Tunica Airport, said she’s anticipating the public will come out and have a look at the aircraft.

However, viewing will be limited.

If residents plan on going to take a look, Lt. Hirn warns them to be prepared for the noise.

“It will be very loud,” Lt. Hirn said. “Definitely recommend if anyone’s coming to watch to bring hearing protection.”

The military would not give details on when the flights would be occurring but some are expected in the overnight hours through Friday.

The 101st Airborne is also using the airport in Oxford for training through Friday.
