Man arrested for death of one-year-old in Jackson

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson police announced a man was arrested in connection to the 2023 death of a one-year-old boy.

Detective Tommie Brown, with the Jackson Police Department (JPD), said Herman Gardner, 31, was recently arrested by U.S. Marshal’s Task Force officers. He has been charged with capital murder.

Jackson police responded to call at Sunset Apartments on Thursday, December 21, 2023, where a one-year-old was found severely beaten and unresponsive. Four other children were found at the residence and were placed in the custody of Child Protection Services (CPS).

Investigators said the child’s cause of death was a lacerated liver caused by blunt force trauma.

Gardner and Yolanda Hunter, the child’s mother, were initially charged with felony child abuse. Hunter was arrested on December 22, 2023, and has since been charged with capital murder.
