JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson firefighters are working around the clock to extinguish the massive tire fire that has been burning since Saturday, August 17.

Thermal drone images from the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency showed the intensity of the fire.

Officials with businesses near East McDowell Road said they’re being affected by the burning tires. Stephen Storment, with the Mississippi Rubber Company, said they’re still working to catch up after having to halt production when their power was shut off.

“Our main problem is our customers having trouble getting to us. We were out of power for a day and a half, which goes down. Loss of revenue. And of course, the traffic to here just been terrible. We’re just having to catch up from the loss of business that we had on Monday and Tuesday, and that just puts the workload on us having to back log what we’ve missed and continue to go forward with what we’ve got coming in the door,” Storment said.

Jackson fire officials said the fire is under control, but it could take up to two weeks to fully extinguish the remaining hot spots.
