JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A special election will be held in Jackson to fill Ward 2’s empty seat.
Former Councilwoman Angelique Lee resigned in August before she pled guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery in federal court.
With the deadline to run in the special election just days away, Celestial Gordon-Griffin announced her candidacy for Ward 2.
“I pledge to listen to all residents of Ward 2. I pledge to advocate and work hard for the residents of Ward 2. I pledge to serve with honesty, integrity and transparency. And I pledge that I will bring unity and be a relationship of opportunity for all the residents of Ward 2,” she said on Monday, September 2.
The Jackson City Council voted on Monday, August 19 to set the special election for Tuesday, October 1. If necessary, a runoff election will be held on October 22.
The qualifying period for candidates began on August 20, and the deadline will be at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 11.
