WARREN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) continued to investigate the bus crash in Warren County that killed seven people and injured dozens on Saturday.

Although three agencies are leading the investigation, several organizations and community members responded to the scene on I-20. Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace spoke highly of the first responders and their professionalism, emphasizing the importance of collaboration.

The crash occurred on Interstate 20 near Bovina around 12:40 a.m. on Saturday, August 31, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP). The bus was traveling from Atlanta, Georgia, to Dallas, Texas.

Six passengers were pronounced deceased at the scene, and one died at Merit Health River Region in Vicksburg. Dozens of other passengers were transported to different hospitals in Vicksburg and Jackson with unknown injuries.

Pace said the crash was the first time he’s seen something of this magnitude. He said the community response went beyond county lines.

“The United Way of West Central Mississippi stepped in and took care of prescription medication. There were prescriptions being prescribed. River Region was able to reach out to United Way. United Way took care of that yesterday, was at the hospital, had a family being discharged that had an infant that had actually been on the bus. Needed a child seat because a child seat had been lost in the wreck, called United Way. Within 30 minutes, they had the child seat. People from within in the community brought clothing so they would have changes of clothes,” the sheriff said.

The NTSB, MHP and the Mississippi Commercial Transportation Enforcement Division are leading the crash investigation. The NTSB expects to release a preliminary report about the crash within 30 days. A final report by the agency is expected within 12 to 24 months.
