JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Leaders with the City of Jackson are asking residents to remain vigilant and prepare for Hurricane Francine. There could be flooding, downed trees and power lines in the city.

Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba signed a State of Emergency ahead of the storm.

Jackson police said they’re prepared for the storm and will work in coordination with Capitol police. Jackson firefighters prepped their equipment in the vent of flooding. The city’s Public Works Department also has their crews on standby to remove downed trees, check traffic lights and set up barricades.

There will be a temporary shelter at the Jackson Police Department (JPD) Training Academy at 3000 St. Charles Street. The shelter will open at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 11.

Starting on Wednesday, there will be sand available to fill sandbags from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 4225 Michael Avalon Street.

Neighbors can use the city’s 311 action line or 601-960-1111 for service calls. Residents are asked to reserve non-emergency calls from 911 to JPD’s administrative line at 601-960-1234.
