JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Thalia Mara Hall remains closed as the City of Jackson works to repair the facility.

Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba said HVAC chillers were recently delivered to the facility.

State Fire Marshal Mike Chaney said the city has until Wednesday, September 24 to correct 22 fire code violations at Thalia Mara Hall. Chaney said his office is willing to work with the city. Thalia Mara Hall could become a red-tagged property or deemed unsafe for occupancy.

Lumumba said he would make sure the Jackson Fire Department (JFD) is present to correct the issues.

“The fortunate thing is that no one’s entirely right, so it’s no danger to anyone, and we will be able to handle these in a timely manner. So, I don’t think that it’s really an issue whatsoever. These minor issues will be addressed. We will have our own fire department there to ensure that the issues that that are present and not only a part of what they listed, but any issues we may find that may not have been identified by the State Fire Marshal. We will work to address those issues,” the mayor said.

In early August, the city was forced to close the facility after “early microbial activity” was discovered following a recent malfunction with the HVAC controller in the facility.

Lumumba said more revenue is needed to care for the aging facility. Elevators and escalators at Thalia Mara Hall will also need extensive work before the building can be utilized.
