More restoration work needed at Thalia Mara Hall before facility can reopen

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Jackson City Council asked several questions on Tuesday regarding Thalia Mara Hall.

In early August, the city was forced to close Thalia Mara Hall after “early microbial activity” was discovered following a recent malfunction with the HVAC controller in the facility.

According to the report by the State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO), mold was found in the facility, and human waste was found on the balcony. The report also found that some fire extinguishers were not up to date. The city submitted an action plan to fix the issues found in the report.

Mike Williams, the deputy director of Human and Cultural Services for the City of Jackson, told the City Council that the multi-phase clean-up and restoration project required first and second round testing for $37,000. He said there’s still more work to do on the facility, including the installation of a new elevator.

Williams doubts Thalia Mara Hall will be ready to host The Nutcracker in December. It could be between four to eight weeks before the facility is back in business.
