JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A man has been booked in at city holding in connection to an officer-involved shooting in Jackson last week.
Detective Tommie Brown said Anthony Johnson, 47, was booked on Tuesday, October 22. Johnson was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and possession of a stolen vehicle.
Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said the incident happened on I-220 on Tuesday, October 15 after two 18-wheelers were involved in an accident. Bailey Martin, press secretary for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS), said officers were responding to a hit-and-run incident where shots were fired.
According to Wade, a man in a stolen Volvo got out of the vehicle and began firing shots at one of the 18-wheeler drivers. Wade believes the vehicle was stolen in another county.
The police chief said officers chased the unidentified suspect to McCain Avenue.
“He brandished the weapon, pointed at the narcotics detectives. They fired upon him, striking him in the lower extremities,” said Wade.
Martin said the officers were not injured during the shooting. Jackson police said they recovered the stolen vehicle and the suspect’s weapon.
Agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) are investigating the shooting and will share their findings with the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
