RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Rankin County deputies arrested and charged a couple with child neglect.
Investigators said deputies responded to the Bay Pointe subdivision just off of Highway 471 just before 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 3. They received a call that the child had wandered up to a home.
Deputies canvassed the area, and they found a residence about a quarter of a mile away with the front door open. They cleared the residence for any suspects and located a six-year-old child in one of the bedrooms.
According to investigators, the deputies were able to locate the contact information for the parents. Investigators said the parents, who were identified as Kimberly and William Ouderkirk, were contacted and stated they were a couple of houses down from their own residence and were headed back. Deputies said the parents did not return to the home.
Authorities said William Ouderkirk contacted the sheriff’s office later and explained they were supposed to have a babysitter until 2:00 a.m. Investigators said they interviewed the alleged babysitter who stated they neither knew the Ouderkirks nor knew where the residence was located.
Deputies said Child Protective Services (CPS) was called to the scene and took custody of the two children.
Both Kimberly and Williams Ouderkirk were later located and arrested. They were both charged with child neglect. Their bonds were set at $20,000 each.
