JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Mississippians went to the polls on Tuesday to vote in the 2024 General Election.

At many polling locations, there have been long lines and long wait times. In Hinds County, polls have been running smoothly. Voters said the election will shift the trajectory of the country for the years to come.

“A lot of dynamics going on in the world right now that has a lot of folks concerned. And so, I just encourage, get out and vote, regardless of who it is, be heard,” said one Hinds County voter.

“It’s a lot going on that needs to be changed for the next four years, if we decide to vote in the right way,” said another Hinds County voter.

Voters said they’re concerned about women’s rights and the economy.

In Rankin County, the voting process was smooth at Crossgates United Methodist Church.

“So many people have fought for us. I just want to be a voice for the young people. You know, to encourage them. You need to literally pull your pants up and get on the streets. Our people have fought for this for years and decades and centuries, even for us to be able to cast a vote,” said Shellie Thomas, who lives in Brandon.

As of 3:30 p.m., the Secretary of State’s Office has received numerous reports of high traffic at polls across the state via their Elections Hotline (800-829-6786).

There were minor reports of:

  • Campaign paraphernalia being worn in some precincts
  • Voting machines temporarily being down
  • A late-opening precinct
  • User error operating ExpressVote machines

Polls close at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, but any voter in line at 7:00 p.m. is legally entitled to cast a ballot. Officials said county election officials will begin tabulating ballots at the closing of the polls.
