TUSKEGEE, Ala. (WRBL) – An early morning shooting on Tuskegee University’s campus has cast a grim pall over the school’s 100th homecoming celebration, leaving one person dead and several others injured, including university students.
The victim, who was not a Tuskegee student, succumbed to gunshot wounds, and the individual’s family has been notified. Several other victims, including Tuskegee students, were injured in the incident and are receiving treatment at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery.
The horror of the moment was captured in a public video posted to social media by K. Brown, a Tuskegee attendee celebrating with friends. The video shows Brown and her friends taking cover amid a barrage of gunfire, her voice shaking as she calls out for a friend in fear. The scene has left the Tuskegee community, as well as alumni and families, shaken as they process the events that unfolded during what should have been a milestone weekend for the historic university.
“PRAYING FOR TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY!!! THEY’RE 100TH YEAR HOMECOMING HAS TURNED INTO A BLOODBATH‼️ PRAYING FOR ALL THOSE STUDENTS AND ALUMNI WHO ARE AFFECTED‼️ LORD PLEASE SHIELD AND PROTECT OUR BABIES‼️‼️ 🙏🏾🙌🏾💔,” one community member posted, echoing the sorrow and anxiety felt by many.
Emergency responders are on the scene, joined by campus security and local law enforcement. The Alabama Bureau of Investigations has taken charge of the investigation, working to determine the circumstances of the shooting. The university has completed student accountability checks, with notifications sent to parents, and is committed to providing further updates as the investigation unfolds.
