JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) announced suspensions and institutional fines stemming from a postgame fight between Jackson State University (JSU) and Alabama State University football teams on Saturday, November 16.

“Acts on unsportsmanlike conduct have zero place in the sports of intercollegiate athletics and within the Southwestern Athletic Conference and we are extremely disappointed to have had consecutive weeks of football competition negatively impacted by these unfortunate occurrences,” said SWAC Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland.

According to SWAC officials, both schools violated the league’s code of ethics/conduct by committing acts of unsportsmanlike conduct.

Sixteen student-athletes (seven from JSU and nine from Alabama State) have been suspended for the next scheduled contest for both schools for their respective involvement in the fight.

Jackson State officials said the suspension is only for the upcoming game against Alcorn State University. They did not identify the players who were suspended.

“Sportsmanship is a core value of Jackson State University and defines the spirit of our athletic programs. We acknowledge and accept the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s decision in response to the event following Saturday’s win. Our athletic director and head football coach are working closely with our team to ensure the standard of sportsmanship, discipline and excellence continues to be a guiding force for the growth and success of our student-athletes,” said JSU President Marcus L. Thompson, Ph.D.

The Conference Office has also levied a fine against JSU in the amount $25,000, along with a fine against Alabama State in the amount of $25,000.
